On April 26, at its 2004 Midyear conference, the National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO) honored former Wyoming Governor Jim Geringer with its National Technology Champion Award. The award was developed to recognize an individual for outstanding contributions in the field of information technology policy. "Governor Geringer's efforts to promote sound IT policy have had a broad impact beyond his home state of Wyoming. Geringer realizes the value of technology integration and is one of the champions of GIS and how to integrate it with all of the data necessary to solve state problems. NASCIO is honored to give Governor Geringer this prestigious award," said NASCIO President and Missouri CIO Gerry Wethington.
The National Technology Champion Award recognizes outstanding leadership by an individual in the field of information technology policy and practice. NASCIO's members recognize that such leadership is key to advancing citizen service, information sharing, and good government. Each recipient's efforts will have broad-ranging impact felt beyond their jurisdiction (e.g. having multi-state impact affecting various levels and/or branches of government, or affecting multiple information technology disciplines). In 2003, NASCIO awarded the first National Technology Champion Award to Congressman Tom Davis (VA) for his outstanding contributions in advancing enterprise-wide information technology architecture, encouraging the reform of unwieldy federal IT funding policies and fighting to bring a unified focus on e-government to Washington. Nominees may be individuals representing federal, state or local government, a legislator, academician, or an individual from the private sector. CIOs are not eligible for this award.
