Consolidation and Shared Services State Forum

The NASCIO Executive Committee has established a Consolidation and Shared Services State Forum with the goal of providing a state members only community of interest for CIOs and other state IT personnel to discuss current issues related to the many challenges facing states as they move towards the consolidation of IT assets and services and implementing shared services models where appropriate. This is a discussion only forum that will include guest speakers, a dedicated Webpage on NASCIO’s Website for exchange of information and other activities deemed appropriate by forum members.

E-Records Management and Digital Preservation Work Group

State CIOs play an ever-increasing role regarding the lifecycle of electronic records management. This issue has recently emerged in prominence due to IT impacts and potential liability concerns regarding "e-discovery" or the electronic records, documents and communications that could be requested during the discovery phase of litigation to which the state is a party. This working group will:
  • Build upon the E-Discovery Working Group's and Enterprise Architecture Committee's previous work on records management and digital preservation
  • Produce a deliverable(s) that will identify and discuss state best practices for embarking on, implementing and maintaining an enterprise records management initiative
  • Partner with other organizations, such as NARA (National Archives and Records Administration) and CoSA (Council of State Archivists)

Committee Deliverables:

Project Management Forum

The purpose of the State IT PM Forum was to build and share a body of knowledge and best practices concerning the disciplines of project and portfolio management in state government. Forum activities were open to all lead state IT project managers or their designees.

Real ID Working Group

The purpose of NASCIO’s REAL ID Work Group is two-pronged.

First, the Work Group serves as a resource in providing AAMVA (American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators) and NGA (the National Governors Association) with the CIO perspective on the electronic verification of identity documents presented by state driver’s license applicants.

Second, the Work Group will examine other REAL ID-related technical and policy issues from the CIO perspective, develop position statements on behalf of its state members, and comment on the proposed regulations that are expected to be promulgated by the Department of Homeland Security later this year.

State IT Workforce Working Group

The aging of the public sector workforce, and the impact this will have on state government IT is commonly acknowledged as a challenge state CIOs now confront and will face for several years in the future. Building on the work of the recently released NASCIO survey, State IT Workforce: Here Today, Gone Tomorrow?, this Working Group will continue to identify and address the pressing challenges facing state CIOs with respect to workforce issues and will explore potential solutions and best practices in order for state CIOs to be prepared for the new workforce of the future.
