About the Work Group

Purpose: The NASCIO Executive Committee has charged the Legacy Systems & Modernization Work Group to address the many strategies, options and approaches states are considering to modernize state IT legacy systems and legacy applications.

Goals and Objectives: The goal of the Legacy Systems & Modernization Work Group is to provide members of NASCIO with information and tools for the enhancement to the technical environment of existing legacy applications; re-engineer commercial “off-the-self” software; convert or translate to newer languages and platforms; extend systems to Web-based applications and presentation layers; utilize EAI to encapsulate and link legacy applications; and other issues such as renovation, extension, SOA, data conversion, applications wrapping, and use of automation tools. Objectives include:

1. Preparing a state-wide survey to establish a baseline for the primary issues of concern for states facing the modernization of legacy systems.
