NASCIO Publishes Report on IT Security with PwC Endowment

(Lexington, KY) - NASCIO, representing chief information officers of the states, has prepared a report on IT security. The report, titled "Public-Sector Information Security: A Call to Action for Public-Sector CIOs," was written for NASCIO by Don Heiman, former Chief Information Technology Officer for the State of Kansas, as part of a grant from the PricewaterhouseCoopers Endowment for the Business of Government.

"NASCIO is pleased to have been able to prepare this report with the support of the PwC Endowment," said Rock Regan, CIO for the State of Connecticut and President of NASCIO. "State CIOs have a lot of experience and expertise to offer on this issue. In fact, as leading implementers of IT and IT-related governance solutions, state CIOs need to be convenors of efforts to protect critical information assets. This document is a great starting point for any public-sector CIO who recognizes that IT security is not just a question of technologies and processes, but part of a larger enterprise philosophy that builds security into the way we do business."

The report contains 10 recommendations for action addressing management, technology, and homeland security elements of public-sector IT security. "We can't honestly say everything has changed since September 11th unless we really look inside ourselves and make security more than just a narrow professional discipline, but a way of life. This report offers a roadmap toward deep-seated IT security in the public sector," said Heiman, whose state was widely regarded as a national leader in digital government and implementation during his tenure as CIO.

The report came out of a November 2001 forum for CIOs held in Washington, DC. Presentations from the forum and a NASCIO version of the report can be viewed and downloaded at http://www.nascio.org/2001/11/securityforum011113-14.cfm.

NASCIO (http://www.nascio.org) is the National Association of State Chief Information Officers and represents the state chief information officers from the 50 states, six U.S. territories and the District of Columbia. The PricewaterhouseCoopers Endowment for the Business of Government (http://endowment.pwcglobal.com) is one of the ways PricewaterhouseCoopers seeks to advance knowledge on how to improve public sector effectiveness. The Endowment focuses on the future of the operation and management of the public sector through grants for research and thought leadership forums.
