NASCIO President Recognized for National Leadership: Wethington Named "Architecture Pioneer" and Vice Chair of Global

Lexington, KY - Missouri State Chief Information Officer and the National Association of State CIOs (NASCIO) President Gerry Wethington received two commendations yesterday for his leadership in establishing national enterprise architecture models and standards, recognizing efforts he has led through the association for the past four years.

Wethington received the Pioneer Award from the SecureE-Biz Leadership Summit Board honoring his ground-breaking work in enterprise architecture among state, local and the federal government. Members of the board include leaders from the Federal CIO Council (FCIOC), the Council for Excellence in Government (CEG), ICHnet.org, and the FCIOC Industry Advisory Council. Mark Forman, associate director for information technology and e-government for the federal Office of Management and Budget (OMB), presented the awards on April 1 during the SecureE-Biz Summit in Crystal City, Virginia. Department of Homeland Security CIO Steve Cooper nominated Wethington for the award.

Wethington's leadership and vision have also greatly contributed to Global, the Global Justice Information Sharing Initiative, where he was appointed to a second two-year term as vice chair of the Global Advisory Committee (GAC) on April 2. Global, known as the "group of groups" is a Federal Advisory Committee whose members advise the US Attorney General on intergovernmental communication issues and data sharing in the justice community. Wethington has served on the board of Global on NASCIO's behalf for the past three years. He was formerly the chair of their Information Standards Working Group, which developed a national repository for information sharing standards among the many disparate systems associated with justice, homeland security and human service programs throughout all levels of government.

"Gerry has been a long-standing and devoted advocate for information sharing on the state, local and federal levels," says Elizabeth Miller, executive director of NASCIO. "His leadership in the CIO community and beyond has spurred more strategic use of technical resources, allowing these investments to progress faster and more efficiently at the state and national level. It is wonderful to see the commitment that both he and the state of Missouri have demonstrated, recognized in the national arena." In addition to serving as NASCIO president in 2002-2003, he also chairs its Enterprise Architecture Committee. He has led this committee for four consecutive years and in this role has made great strides in creating uniform architectural standards across multi-jurisdictional boundaries. NASCIO's President also serves a chair-person of SEARCH, the National Consortium for Justice Information and Statistics.

"This leadership from Missouri is certainly an outstanding example to follow," according to Governor Holden's Chief of Staff, Jane Dueker. "Gerry has leveraged his work with these leading national organizations to improve efficiency, cost savings and service to the citizens and agencies in his home state. Due in large part to his efforts, Missouri is recognized as a champion for intergovernmental collaboration and sound project management and integration - the underlying principles that guide development of a true enterprise architecture."

NASCIO represents the state chief information officers from the 50 states, six U.S. territories and the District of Columbia. Members include cabinet and senior level state officials responsible for information resource management. Other IT officials participate as associate members and private sector representatives may become corporate members.
