State CIOs Convene For NASCIO's Spring Meeting
(Lexington, KY) - The National Association of State Chief Information Officers will meet at the Hilton Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on April 6 through April 8 for its 2003 Midyear Conference, one of the association's two yearly membership meetings. Responding to the dynamic challenges and opportunities confronting today's CIO, the theme of this particular event will be "Succeeding in a Changing Environment." CIOs from 29 states will be in attendance. In addition, nine of those CIOs, including host state CIO Arthur Stephens, have been in their posts three months or less.
Bob Evans, editor-in-chief of Information Week, will kick off the event with a keynote speech. In addition, the conference will feature sessions addressing some of the most pressing issues of the day such as funding, seamless government, homeland security technologies and the role of the CIO. On Monday, April 7, state budget and legislative leaders will provide an overview and update of state IT budgets on the State IT Funding session. During Monday's Luncheon, NASCIO will honor the winner of the association's newest award, the National Technology Champion Award. This award will be given out yearly to an individual who has shown outstanding national leadership in the area of information technology policy.
Later in the day, former Michigan Governor John Engler, 2002 Winter Olympics Communications Director Steve Proctor and South Dakota CIO Otto Doll will participate in the Seamless Government session moderated by John Monroe, editor of Federal Computer Week (FCW). Monday's session will conclude with the Homeland Security Technologies session with Washington State CIO Stuart McKee moderating a panel of experts who will identify specific technologies in this area and why states might need them.
Tuesday, April 8 will feature a half-day of discussions devoted to the role of the state
CIO. Aldona Valicenti, CIO for the Commonwealth of Kentucky, will moderate a panel
discussion on the topic and Peter Harkness, editor and publisher of Governing
magazine, will moderate the Corporate and CIO Roundtables. The moderators will
use Interactive polling technology throughout the sessions to obtain live,
anonymous responses from the audience members and the Roundtable participants.
