NASCIO Honors Congressman Tom Davis with First Annual National Technology Champion Award
(Pittsburgh, PA) - On April 7, at its 2003 Midyear conference, the National Association of State Chief Information Officers honored Congressman Tom Davis with its prestigious National Technology Champion Award. This is the inaugural year for the award. The award was developed to recognize an individual for outstanding contributions in the field of information technology policy.
With his work in advancing the case for enterprise-wide information technology architecture, encouraging the reform of unwieldy federal IT funding policies, and fighting to bring a unified focus on e-government to Washington, Representative Davis has truly been a technology champion. "We are pleased to present the Technology Champion Award to Congressman Davis. His advocacy for information technology policy exemplifies the champion spirit that this award represents," said NASCIO President and Missouri CIO Gerry Wethington.
In the last two years, Davis successfully passed several important bills through Congress, including the Digital Tech Corps Act, the E-Gov Act of 2002, the Federal Security Information Act and the Critical Infrastructure Information Act. Davis' strong commitment to working with the states is critical to improving information technology policies and practices.
Representative Davis was recently named Chairman of the House Committee on Government Reform in the 108th Congress after serving as Chairman of the newly formed Government Reform Subcommittee on Technology and Procurement Policy since January 2002. He also reclaimed his seat on the Energy and Commerce Committee and serves on the Subcommittee on Telecommunications and the Internet.
NASCIO will give out the award on an annual basis as it strives to acknowledge pioneers promoting excellence in both technology and good government. Nominees may be federal, state or local officials or staff, such as: a legislator, academician or an individual in the private sector. State chief information officers (CIO) are not eligible for this award. Nominations are accepted from NASCIO's state and corporate membership. Information technology, and the sound IT policy to manage it, facilitates the information sharing and knowledge transfer critical to today's national security needs.
NASCIO represents the state chief information officers from the 50 states, six U.S. territories and the District of Columbia. Members include cabinet and senior level state officials responsible for information resource management. Other IT officials participate as associate members and private sector representatives may become corporate members.
