NASCIO Honors Governor Jim Geringer with National Technology Champion Award

(Chicago, IL) - On April 26, at its 2004 Midyear conference, the National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO) honored former Wyoming Governor Jim Geringer with its National Technology Champion Award. The award was developed to recognize an individual for outstanding contributions in the field of information technology policy.

"Governor Geringer's efforts to promote sound IT policy have had a broad impact beyond his home state of Wyoming. Geringer realizes the value of technology integration and is one of the champions of GIS and how to integrate it with all of the data necessary to solve state problems. NASCIO is honored to give Governor Geringer this prestigious award," said NASCIO President and Missouri CIO Gerry Wethington.

Jim Geringer was elected as Wyoming's 30th governor in 1994 and completed his second term in January 2003. During his time in office, Governor Geringer focused on improving education through standards, accountability and technology. He modernized economic planning extensively to include technology. In addition he has served as chair of the National Governors Association (NGA) Technology Task Force.

Governor Geringer's advocacy for technology has centered on the end result of how technology enhances services, emphasizing the benefits of integrated service delivery and enterprise-wide solutions.

NASCIO presents the award on an annual basis to acknowledge pioneers promoting excellence in both technology and good government. Nominees may be federal, state or local officials or staff, such as a legislator, academician or an individual in the private sector. State chief information officers (CIO) are not eligible for this award. Nominations are accepted from NASCIO's state and corporate membership. Information technology, and the sound IT policy to manage it, facilitates the information sharing and knowledge transfer critical to today's national security needs.

NASCIO represents the state chief information officers from the 50 states, six U.S. territories and the District of Columbia. Members include cabinet and senior level state officials responsible for information resource management. Other IT officials participate as associate members and private sector representatives may become corporate members.
