NASCIO Releases Wireless in the Workplace:
A Guide for Government Enterprises

(Lexington, KY) - The National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO) has released Wireless in the Workplace: A Guide for Government Enterprises. This publication is intended to help government enterprises make informed decisions about wireless technology. Wireless local area networks (WLANs) and Wi-Fi "hot spots" are rapidly emerging, yet many individuals and organizations fail to fully understand the security risks of this inherently open technology and expose their systems unnecessarily. Wireless in the Workplace will address this issue along with a variety of other topics associated with working in the wireless world. It highlights key issues such as:

  • wireless applications & uses
  • wireless technology options
  • wireless standards
  • wireless security
  • wireless network management & performance
  • wireless installation & maintenance
"Working in collaboration with our NASCIO corporate partners, Wireless in the Workplace: A Guide for Government Enterprises reflects NASCIO's ongoing commitment to addressing emerging policy and management issues that will likely impact state government IT enterprises," said Missouri CIO and NASCIO President Gerry Wethington.

The publication was produced by NASCIO's Infrastructure subcommittee chaired by John Gillispie, chief operating officer of the Department of Administrative Services - Information Technology Enterprise in Iowa. "Wireless is the future of the networking environment. This guide is designed to educate state CIOs and their staffs on the implementation challenges and opportunities associated with wireless technology," said Gillispie.

Complimentary copies are available to NASCIO members and available for purchase to non-members at http://www.nascio.org/publications/index.cfm.

NASCIO represents the state chief information officers from the 50 states, six U.S. territories and the District of Columbia. Members include cabinet and senior level state officials responsible for information resource management. Other IT officials participate as associate members and private sector representatives may become corporate members.
