NASCIO Presents Peter Harkness with National Technology Champion Award

(Chantilly, VA) – Today, the National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO) awards Peter Harkness, Editor and Publisher, Governing magazine, as the association’s 2008 National Technology Champion Award recipient in recognition of his outstanding contributions to promote sound public sector information technology policy.

“We are pleased to recognize Peter as this year’s NTC award recipient,” said NASCIO President and Iowa CIO, John Gillispie. “Under Peter’s leadership Governing magazine has been instrumental in facilitating positive change in government with thoughtful commentary and articles on information technology issues and their annual Managing Technology conferences. We applaud Peter’s dedication to highlight progress being made in government, recognize leaders driving that progress, and to stimulate others to strive for the same type of leadership by example.”

As Editor and Publisher of Governing magazine, Harkness has had a tremendous influence on public policy with respect to government’s use of information technology. Under his leadership, Governing’s Public Officials of the Year awards have encouraged public sector leaders to be bold in their actions, to reach for lofty goals in order to facilitate positive change and progress in government, to make government more efficient and to most importantly offer better service to the citizens they serve.

NASCIO presents the National Technology Champion Award on an annual basis to acknowledge pioneers who promote excellence in both technology and good government. Nominees may be an elected or appointed official representing federal, state or local government, an academician, author, journalist, or an individual from the non-profit or private sector. However, current state CIOs and individuals currently employed by NASCIO corporate member companies are not eligible to receive this award.

NASCIO is the premier network and resource for state CIOs and a leading advocate for technology policy at all levels of government. NASCIO represents state chief information officers and information technology executives from the states, territories, and the District of Columbia. The primary state government members are senior officials who have executive level and statewide responsibility for information technology leadership. State officials who are involved in agency level information technology management may participate as state members. Representatives from other public sector and non-profit organizations may also participate as associate members. Private sector firms may join as corporate members and participate in the Corporate Leadership Council.
