Howard Schmidt Spoke to State Members at the 2010 NASCIO Midyear Conference

(Baltimore, MD) –Howard Schmidt, White House Cyber Security Coordinator, addressed the state CIOs today in Baltimore, Maryland at the 2010 NASCIO Midyear Conference.

Schmidt discussed the White House Comprehensive National Cybersecurity Initiative (CNCI), a plan for securing government and private industry networks. This consists of twelve initiatives covering education; research and development; deployment of intrusion detection and prevention system sensors across the Federal enterprise; and development of a multi-pronged approach for global supply chain risk management.

In his presentation, Schmidt tackled new opportunities for coordination and collaboration between the states and the federal government on issues related to cyber security and critical infrastructure protection. He also commented that Transparency is vital to the US's cyber security efforts and challenged the attendees to reflect on what they’ve done over the past year to make cyber space secure and what they plan to do as we lead up to Cyber Security Awareness month in October.
