State Adoption of Health Information Technology Surging, State CIO Association Finds
(LEXINGTON, Ky) — States have experienced expeditious growth in the adoption of health information technology over the past year, according to a new report, “Profiles of Progress 4: State Health IT Initiatives,” released today by the National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO). The publication is available for download on NASCIO’s website, www.nascio.org/publications.
As government leaders increasingly support health IT as a means to improve patient care and reduce costs, it is increasingly imperative that states implement an enterprise-wide architecture for the statewide exchange of health information. NASCIO’s Profiles of Progress provides a snapshot of how states are responding to the challenge. The compendium analyzes what role, if any, the state CIO is playing in these efforts.
“State CIOs and government leaders recognize the importance of state-driven health IT efforts,” said Doug Robinson, NASCIO executive director. “They value the critical role of states in planning and implementing a secure, efficient and interoperable health information exchange.”
NASCIO, a national organization that serves as a resource for state CIOs and an advocate for technology policies at all levels of government, has produced four installments of Profiles of Progress. Since Profiles of Progress 3 was released in April 2009, there has been a tremendous flurry of activity due to the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology announcing the recipients of the State Health Information Exchange Cooperative Agreement Program. Funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act has started to be dispensed to state and regional efforts across the nation, and will be used to invest, solidify and make sustainable health IT efforts in the states.
