State Health IT and ARRA: NASCIO Urges State CIO Involvement

NASCIO's Health IT Working Group, chaired by Otto Doll, South Dakota CIO, just released " HITECH in the States: Action List for State CIOs." This brief examines the new landscape of health IT and health information exchange (HIE) in the states following the implementation of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). Recognition Awards for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Information Technology in State Government
Celebrating its 21st consecutive year, the Recognition Awards Program features categories reflecting the wide range of IT projects currently under development within state government. Emphasis was placed on recognizing programs that exemplify best practices, support the public policy goals of state leaders, represent an innovative use of existing and new technology, assist government officials to efficiently execute their duties, provide cost-effective service to citizens and are transferable to other agencies or units of government.
Thirty exemplary initiatives were chosen as finalists from 117 submissions by 31 states. NASCIO's Awards committee, comprised of judges from NASCIO's state and corporate members, selected the 2009 award finalists. Full submissions from all nominations are posted on NASCIO's website at www.nascio.org/awards.

Private Sector IT Leaders on Annual Conference Panel
The Programs Committee announced the selection of a panel of private sector thought leaders for the 2009 Annual Conference session, " Perspectives on the Future of IT." NASCIO believes that an open exchange of ideas at this executive leadership level reflects the necessity and importance of relationships between the private sector and state CIOs. The following panelists were selected to participate in this forum:

Committee & Work Group Updates
Dugan Petty, CIO of Oregon will be the featured speaker on the next Innovation and Best Practices State Forum on Tuesday, August 25 at 2:00 pm ET. This conference call will feature a presentation, " Oregon's Green Initiatives Include IT," and will be delivered by Petty, Nick Betsacon and Bryan Nealy.
The Corporate Leadership Council (CLC) will begin accepting nominations for the 2009-2010 Chair and Vice Chair on Wednesday, August 26 through Friday, September 4. Elections will run from Thursday, September 10 through Tuesday, September 22. The incoming Chair and Vice Chair will be announced at the CLC Face to Face Meeting on Sunday, October 25.
