  • State CIOs Flock to Tucson for NASCIO Annual Conference

    NASCIO's 2007 Annual Conference is only a few weeks away. The event will be held September 30 - October 3 at the Marriott Starr Pass in Tucson, Arizona. Representatives from at least 43 states including 36 state CIOs are expected to attend the conference.

    The event, themed Building on the Past, Managing the Present, Stepping into the Future, will begin with a keynote address by Neil Howe, renowned authority on generations in America, who will explore the evolving expectations and potential contributions of the Millennial Generation. Tuesday's agenda starts with David Nour's presentation about Relationship Economics - the art and science of relationships. Conference sessions will focus on shared services, the greening of IT, e-discovery and digital records, IT workforce challenges, and cross-boundary collaboration. Panels will also include eGovernment 2.0: Serving Generation Next; Data Breach! What State Officials Need to Know About IT Security, Planning and Response; and Fast Forward: Technology Serving an Aging Population. For a complete conference agenda, click here.

    Don't forget these upcoming conference deadlines:

    • Tuesday, September 18 - The deadline to be listed in the printed conference attendance roster.
    • Tuesday, September 25 - The final date to register online. Registration will reopen onsite on September 30, but registration rates will be higher.
  • NASCIO Awarded Grant by the Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance

    NASCIO received official grant award notification from the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) to promote the need for a common framework, or architecture, and standards for information sharing at all levels of government. This continues the partnership that began in 1998 between NASCIO and BJA to advance Enterprise Architecture and information sharing in the states.
  • NASCIO Announces New Corporate Leadership Council Officers

    NASCIO is pleased to announce the newly elected Corporate Leadership Council (CLC) officers for the 2007-2008 program year. The incoming Chair will be Milford Sprecher, SAP and the Vice Chair will be Brenda Sessions, CIBER. The CLC represents all of NASCIO's corporate members and the chair holds an advisory seat on NASCIO's Executive Committee.

    ALASKA
    Mike Callahan has resigned from his position as Director and Chief Information Officer effective September 4, 2007. Dave Blaisdell will serve as the Acting Director of the Enterprise Technology Services Division until a new director is appointed.

    IDAHO
    Keith Johnson has resigned from his position as Director of the Department of Administration. Governor "Butch" Otter named Mike Gwartney as the Director of the Idaho Department of Administration on June 1, 2007, after he successfully headed-up the Governor's transition team.   • Schafer Discusses Consolidation with Computerworld

    In an interview with Computerworld, West Virginia Chief Technology Officer Kyle Schafer talked about recent consolidation initiatives in the state and commented on the release of NASCIO's Survey on Enterprise Data Center Consolidation in the States. The survey is a product of the Enterprise Infrastructure and Services Committee which Schafer co-chairs. To read the complete story, click here.

  • New Corporate Members

NASCIO on the Road

  • NASCIO Enterprise Architect Eric Sweden spoke at the Global Justice Information Sharing Users' Conference held August 20-23 in Chicago. Sweden co-presented with Scott Came of SEARCH about strategic planning and enterprise architecture. Other sessions at this conference focused on the policy and technical aspects of NIEM, the National Information Exchange Model, and adoption of the Global Justice XML Data Model (GJXDM), including specific implementation tools and techniques. The Global Justice Reference Architecture for Service Oriented Architecture was also discussed.   • Brenda Decker, Co-Chair of NASCIO's Security and Privacy Committee, represented the association at the Council of State Government (CSG) Midwestern Legislative Conference Annual Meeting on August 26-29 in Traverse City, Michigan. Decker spoke on the topic of Protecting Privacy in a Technological Age with Dr. Larry Ponemon of the Ponemon Institute.
  • Executive Director Doug Robinson and Enterprise Architect Eric Sweden attended the Bureau of Justice Assistance Training and Technical Assistance Providers meeting on September 10-11 in Washington, DC.

Committee & Work Group Updates

  • NASCIO's Disaster Recovery Working Group will complete its series of products on disaster recovery and business continuity by publishing an issue brief that addresses the challenges state CIOs may face when dealing with pandemics and the associated costs in personnel and lost productivity. This resource is scheduled for release in late October. Other resources released in this series include the IT Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity Tool-kit: Planning for the Next Disaster and NASCIO's DVD on disaster recovery, Government at Risk: Protecting Your IT Infrastructure.
  • The E-Discovery Working Group released an issue brief entitled Seek and Ye Shall Find? State CIOs Must Prepare Now for E-Discovery on September 5. The working group will complete a longer research brief focused on starting points for state CIOs on E-Discovery after the Annual Conference.
  • The Enterprise Architecture Committee is completing work on Part III in their series on Electronic Records Management/Digital Preservation. This research brief is focused on strategies and technological solutions for managing the proliferation of electronic records. The brief will explore what is available now, and what is anticipated in the future. Issues of relevance to state CIOs include continuity of operations, legal liability and the issues of authoritative sources. This brief will be released in October 2007.

    The Enterprise Architecture Committee will hold a meeting on Sunday afternoon, September 30 4:00 - 5:30 pm MST at the NASCIO Annual Conference in Tucson, Arizona. The focus of this meeting will be a progress report of the EA Cooperative. The Commonwealth of Virginia will present their use of a visual modeling tool for documenting Virginia's Business Architecture. The meeting will also include an exploratory discussion regarding the sharing of enterprise architecture deliverables and resources across states.   • The Enterprise Infrastructure and Services Committee released their report entitled Survey on Enterprise Data Center Consolidation in the States: Strategies and Business Justification on August 20, completing the committee's work for the year.
  • The Health IT Working Group will soon release Profiles of Progress 2: State Health IT Initiatives providing a state-by-state "snapshot" of health IT initiatives under development. This compendium is a continuation of the original Profiles of Progress publication, released in 2006, and will feature the most current state health IT efforts that are underway as well as what role, if any, the state CIO is playing in the development of these initiatives.
  • The Project Management Forum will hold a roundtable discussion on September 18 at 3:00 pm ET. During this time, participants can discuss ideas for topics they would like to have featured during the upcoming program year, as well as volunteer to host a monthly Forum call.
