  • NASCIO's Annual Conference Held in Tucson, Arizona

    September 30 - October 3 CIOs and officials from 42 states along with representatives from 112 related groups and companies met in Tucson for the 2007 NASCIO Annual Conference. The theme of the event was Building on the Past, Managing the Present, Stepping into the Future. The conference featured a wide variety of speakers addressing a diverse range of topics. Again this year, webcasts of the conference sessions have been archived and are available for review. Click here to access these archives. Also available are the interactive audience polling results and individual speaker presentations from the sessions.
  • 2007 NASCIO Recognition Awards for Outstanding Achievement in State IT Announced

    Recipients of the 2007 NASCIO Recognition Awards for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Information Technology in State Government were announced on October 2 at the State Dinner held in conjunction with NASCIO's Annual Conference. NASCIO selected eleven state IT initiatives in ten categories to receive the 2007 Recognition Awards.

    NASCIO's Recognition Awards Program, in its 19th consecutive year, features several categories updated for 2007 to reflect the wide range of IT projects currently under development within state governments. Emphasis was placed on recognizing programs that exemplify best practices, support the public policy goals of state leaders, assist government officials to execute their duties and provide cost-effective services to citizens.

    State government projects and initiatives from each of the 50 US states were eligible to be nominated for these prestigious annual awards. Criteria for selection included a description of the business problem and solution, significance to the operation of government, and public value of the project. The eleven award-winning entries were chosen from 107 submissions by 30 states. Full submissions from all nominations are posted on NASCIO's website at www.nascio.org/awards.

  • NASCIO Announces New President and Officers

    John Gillispie, Iowa CIO/COO, has been elected to serve as NASCIO President for its 2007-2008 program year. Gillispie will replace Michigan CIO Teri Takai who served as association President for the 2006-2007 program year. The membership also elected several new officers and directors. The following are the new and returning officers and directors:

    The new directors join returning Executive Committee directors Brenda Decker, CIO of Nebraska; Joe Fleckinger, CIO of Oklahoma; and Steve Fletcher CIO of Utah. The new leadership officially took effect immediately following NASCIO's State Dinner on the evening of October 2, 2007.

  • CIO Transitions

    FLORIDA
    James Zingale will serve as NASCIO's primary point of contact effective October 15, 2007. Dr. Zingale has served as Executive Director of the Florida Department of Revenue since January 2000 and will lead efforts to hire a permanent state CIO during this fiscal year.

    PENNSYLVANIA
    Kristen Miller has resigned from her position as Chief Information Officer effective September 21, 2007. Chad Firestone, Executive Deputy CIO, will serve as the acting Chief Information Officer until a new CIO is appointed.

  • NASCIO Senior Issues Coordinator Mary Gay Whitmer attended the Global Privacy and Information Quality Working Group held October 9-10 in Fairfax, Virginia. The working group examines and produces deliverables to assist justice community officials pursue information sharing efforts while protecting citizen information privacy and security. They anticipate releasing one-page briefs highlighting its previous deliverables, including a guide to privacy policies. They are also exploring content for a deliverable on establishing a program for enhanced information quality.
  • Stephanie Jamison NASCIO Issues Coordinator represented the association at the eHealth Initiative (eHI) Annual Conference held October 11-12 in Washington, DC. This event featured keynote speakers such as Dr. Robert Kolodner, National Coordinator of Health Information Technology and Mark McClellan, former Director of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, among many others. In conjunction with the conference, eHI released phase one of its eHealth Initiative Blueprint: Building Consensus for Common Action. Speakers and panelists discussed several key areas of health IT development and implementation including privacy and security, and examined regional, state and federal efforts to enhance health IT adoption.
  • Mary Gay Whitmer will represent NASCIO at the upcoming International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) Privacy Academy in San Francisco, CA October 22-24.
  • Doug Robinson NASCIO Executive Director will be speaking at the NIC eGovernment Leadership Summit in Portland, OR on October 24.
  • NASCIO Enterprise Architect Eric Sweden will represent NASCIO at the Global Advisory Committee meeting to be held October 30-31 in Washington, DC. The Global Advisory Committee (GAC) was implemented by the US Attorney General to advise the US Department of Justice in the establishment of the Global Justice Information Sharing Initiative.
  • Eric Sweden will be participating in the Global Justice Executive Architecture Committee meeting on November 6-7. Global was created to support the broad scale exchange of pertinent justice and public safety information. It promotes standards-based electronic information exchange to provide the justice community with timely, accurate, complete, and accessible information in a secure and trusted environment.
  • Doug Robinson will be speaking at the Oracle OpenWorld Conference in San Francisco, CA November 11-15.

Committee & Work Group Updates

  • NASCIO's Corporate Leadership Council (CLC) Public Private Partnership Working Group released the results of its survey State IT Workforce: Here Today, Gone Tomorrow? on October 2 as part of a session at the Annual Conference. This national survey was designed to garner factual evidence about the current and future landscape of the state IT workforce from the view of the state CIO.
  • NASCIO's Disaster Recovery Working Group will complete its series of products on disaster recovery and business continuity by publishing an issue brief that addresses the challenges state CIOs may face when dealing with pandemics and the associated costs in personnel and lost productivity. This resource is scheduled for release in late October. Other resources released in this series include the IT Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity Tool-kit: Planning for the Next Disaster and NASCIO's DVD on disaster recovery, Government at Risk: Protecting Your IT Infrastructure.
  • The E-Discovery Working Group is scheduled to release a research brief in late October exploring the role that the state CIO can play in enhancing enterprise records management to insure that discovery requests can be fulfilled in a reliable and timely fashion.
  • The Health IT Working Group released Profiles of Progress II: State Health IT Initiatives on September 19. This updated compendium delivers a state-by-state "snapshot" that illustrates progress in health information technology (health IT) implementation across the country.
  • The IT Security Video Working Group is beginning work on a short persuasional video scheduled for release in January 2008. The goal of this project will be to raise awareness regarding the importance of ongoing and adequate funding for IT security. The target audience for the video is elected and appointed state officials, such as Governors, legislators and state budget officers. The video will be produced in DVD format and will be approximately 8 minutes in length. A limited number of corporate sponsorships are still available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
