  • 2008 National Technology Champion Award Nominations are Now Open

    NASCIO is now accepting nominations for the 2008 National Technology Champion Award. The award recognizes one individual annually for outstanding contributions in the field of information technology in the public sector. NASCIO strives to acknowledge innovators who promote excellence in both technology and good government. Nominees should have a proven track-record of sustained interest in and advocacy for IT in the public sector.   • Call for Ideas for the 2008 Midyear Conference

    NASCIO's Programs Committee is collecting suggestions for speakers and session topics for the 2008 Midyear Conference. This is an opportunity to help ensure that the conference program addresses issues of interest and importance to NASCIO members. CLICK HERE to use the Call for Ideas form to enter suggestions online. The Programs Committee will utilize these suggestions as starting point in planning the conference program. The deadline for submitting ideas is Friday, January 18, 2008.

  • NASCIO Co-Sponsor of PTI Health Care IT Summit in Atlanta, January 30-31, 2008

    NASCIO will co-host the PTI Health Care IT Summit along with the National Association of Counties (NACo) and the Association County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG). Public Technology Institute (PTI) is a national, non-profit technology research and development organization created by and for cities and counties. The intent of the summit is to start a dialog among government leaders at the local, state, and federal levels, on the role of IT in improving delivery of health care services. NASCIO members may register at the PTI member rate. The registration fee for members is $295. Registration Deadline: January 25, 2008.   • CIO Transitions

    CALIFORNIA
    On December 6, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced the appointment of Teri Takai as the state chief information officer. Takai is the first cabinet-level state CIO in California. She is currently the CIO with Michigan and plans to make the transition in January 2008.

    ILLINOIS
    Greg Wass has been appointed the new CIO for the state of Illinois effective November 1. Doug Kasamis will remain with Illinois as the state Deputy CIO.

    KENTUCKY
    Mark Rutledge resigned as the Commissioner and Chief Information Officer for Kentucky effective December 10. Mark has served the Commonwealth for the past nine years and served as CIO since August 2006.

    MARYLAND
    Ellis Kitchen stepped down as the Chief Information Officer for the state of Maryland effective November 30, 2007. On November 30, Governor Martin O'Malley announced that Elliot H. Schlanger has been named Chief of Information Technology for the state of Maryland. The press release is available HERE.

    MICHIGAN
    In Michigan, Governor Jennifer Granholm announced the appointment of Kenneth D. Theis as Director of the Department of Information Technology (DIT). Theis replaces Teri Takai who has resigned and has accepted a position in California. The press release is available HERE.

  • OTHER NEWS

    Brenda Decker, CIO, state of Nebraska and Teri Takai, Director and CIO, state of Michigan were among those honored as Premier 100 IT Leaders in 2008 by ComputerWorld.     Security Magazine named Dan Lohrmann, Michigan's Chief Information Security Officer as an IT Visionary among Security's Top 25 People. Lohrmann currently serves as Chair of NASCIO's IT Security Video Working Group. CLICK HERE to read the complete story.

    DotGov Spotlight featured interview with Dugan Petty, CIO, Oregon. Dugan discusses his plans to lower greenhouse gas emissions and the way he leads to sustainability by creating a Sustainable Supplier Council. CLICK HERE to read the complete interview.

    The National Information Exchange Model (NIEM) initiative has created an online webinar available at www.niem.gov/library.php#webinar. This webinar presents an overview of NIEM including the business value, governance, examples from Ohio and New York. NASCIO promotes NIEM as the methodology for planning, designing and implementing collaborative information exchanges. NASCIO has partnered with the US Department of Justice and the IJIS Institute to facilitate executive briefings in the states. Current plans for 2008 include briefings in Kansas and South Carolina.     Doug Robinson, NASCIO’s Executive Director and Eric Sweden, NASCIO’s Enterprise Architecture Issues Coordinator co-authored an article about Managing the Digital Assets of State Government. The article was published in StateTech online magazine. To read the article CLICK HERE.

  • New Corporate Members

    NASCIO is pleased to welcome new corporate members Intel Corporation and Pearson VUE.

NASCIO on the Road

  • Delaware CIO Tom Jarrett and NASCIO Issues Coordinator Stephanie Jamison represented the association at the Council of State Governments 2007 Annual State Trends and Leadership Forum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on November 11-14. Jarrett serves as Vice-Chair of CSG’s Technology Working Group, which met on Sunday, November 11. Jarrett and Jamison attended on behalf of NASCIO and discussed state technology trends, the role of the state CIO within state government, and the work NASCIO has done regarding issues such as the state IT workforce, health IT and disaster recovery/business continuity.

Committee & Work Group Updates

  • The E-Discovery Working Group released a research brief "The Search is On: State CIO Starting Points for E-Discovery". To view the brief, click here www.nascio.org/publications/
  • The Enterprise Architecture Committee has held several conference calls with members of the National States Geographic Information Council (NSGIC). There are plans to collaborate on deliverables that promote the leveraging of GIS capabilities, collaborative information exchange, leverage of the Justice Reference Architecture for SOA for managing GIS services within an SOA environment, implementation of exchanges using NIEM, and demonstrating traceability to the CIO Top Ten Priorities.
  • The IT Security Video Working Group under the direction of Michigan's Chief Information Security Officer, Dan Lohrmann, is on target to release a persuasional video in early 2008. The goal of this project will be to raise awareness regarding the importance of ongoing and adequate funding for IT security.
