NASCIO Executive Committee holds Strategic Planning Session
The NASCIO Executive Committee held an important face-to-face strategic planning meeting in Dallas on March 14-15 to review the performance of the association, discuss current issues, prioritize opportunities, and outline their vision of the future environment in state IT. The governance body allocated time to reviewing and validating the current strategic plan and recommending changes to business objectives. With some lively interactions on key issues, the session was both productive and informative. President John Gillispie described the meeting as "time well spent and a valuable investment in NASCIO." -
Nominations to Open for the 2008 NASCIO Recognition Awards
NASCIO is pleased to announce that nominations for the 2008 Recognition Awards for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Information Technology in State Government will be accepted beginning on March 19. These awards honor state information technology initiatives which exemplify best practices, support the public policy goals of state leaders, assist government officials to innovatively execute their duties, and provide cost-effective service to citizens.Complete details about the 2008 Recognition Awards including instructions for submitting nominations will be available at www.nascio.org/awards on Wednesday, March 19. The final deadline for nominations is Tuesday, June 3, 2008. Questions about the Recognition Awards program should be addressed to Dianne Adams at dadams@AMRms.com.

"IT Governance and Business Outcomes - A Shared Relationship Between IT and Business Leaders" provides an introduction to enterprise IT governance and presents calls to action for the state CIO. - NASCIO President John Gillispie and Executive Director Doug Robinson attended the National Governors Association Winter Meeting in Washington, DC, February 23-25. Click here for more information about the Winter Meeting.
- NASCIO members John Gillispie, CIO of Iowa, Teri Takai, CIO of California, Tom Jarrett, CIO of Delaware, and Stephanie Jamison, Issues Coordinator for NASCIO, attended the Healthcare Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Annual conference, held February 23-28 in Orlando, Florida. Takai was a featured speaker on several panels. The HIMSS conference drew over 28,000 attendees and explored a myriad of issues related to health IT including federal, state and local initiatives, interoperability, electronic health record adoption, and privacy and security issues.
- Senior Issues Coordinator, Mary Gay Whitmer attended a drafter's meeting of the Global Justice Privacy and Information Quality Working Group in Washington DC, March 14, 2008. Whitmer is assisting with the composition of a guide on Information Quality.
- NASCIO Executive Director, Doug Robinson, Enterprise Architect, Eric Sweden and the Executive Committee participated in the NASCIO Strategic Planning Meeting on March 15, 2008, in Dallas, TX.
- Mary Gay Whitmer, Senior Issues Coordinator will attend the Privacy Summit of the International Association of Privacy Professionals in Washington DC on March 26-28, 2008.
Committee & Work Group Updates
- The Corporate Leadership Council held its Face to Face meeting on February 26 in Reston, Virginia at the Oracle Building. Mark Stencel, Governing, spoke on trends from the 2008 Government Performance Project. Twenty-nine companies were represented at the meeting. Open discussions included the CLC project, overall satisfaction with the CLC, and upcoming midyear activities.
- The E-Records Management Working Group is working on a brief that will focus on best practices in the states and beyond on e-records management and digital preservation. The group anticipates completing the brief in April.
NASCIO hosted an All States Call regarding E-records management and digital preservation. The call featured Jason R. Baron, Director of Litigation, the National Archives and Records Administration. In addition to NASCIO members, the call was open to members of NAGARA (the National Association of Government Archives and Records Administrators), CoSA (the Council of State Archivists), NAAG (the National Association of State Attorneys Genera), and NASS (the National Association of Secretaries of State). - The Green IT Working Group is drafting a brief regarding ways that state CIOs can be involved in Green IT initiatives and what they can do today to begin to "go green." It will feature examples of various state efforts and identify what trends they should look for in the future. A late April release date is anticipated.
- The Innovative Funding for State IT Working Group is drafting an all-states survey that will be distributed to state CIOs to identify innovative funding methods and models that will provide the backdrop for a forthcoming publication. This survey will be used to update NASCIO's 2003 Innovative Funding for Innovative State IT report.
- The Legacy Systems & Modernization Working Group is drafting a survey of the state CIOs to gauge the primary issues and points-of-concern for state IT organizations as they relate to the modernization of legacy IT systems and applications. The survey results will help to set a baseline for further research on the topic.
- The State IT Workforce Working Group is drafting a brief regarding recruitment and retention of state IT employees. It will feature both traditional and innovative recruitment methods, successful retention strategies, and numerous state examples of best practices. An early April release date is anticipated.
