  • 2008 NASCIO Recognition Awards Nominations Due June 3

    2008 marks the 20th consecutive year that NASCIO has honored state IT achievements through Recognition Awards Program. Emphasis is placed on recognizing programs that exemplify best practices, support the public policy goals of state leaders, assist government officials to innovatively execute their duties and provide cost-effective services to citizens.

    Projects may be submitted by any NASCIO state or territory member. Corporate members and non-profit organizations who would like to submit a nomination must work with the state CIO's office to coordinate their nomination. Compete details about the 2008 award categories and submission criteria are available at www.nascio.org/awards. The final deadline for nominations is Tuesday, June 3. Please contact Dianne Adams, NASCIO Programs & Education Coordinator, at dadams@amrms.com with questions about the awards program.

  • NASCIO Midyear Conference Resounding Success

    State Chief Information Officers, public IT policy leaders and corporate members gathered in Chantilly, VA, April 29 - May 2, 2008 for the 2008 Midyear Conference. The conference kicked off with an informative presentation by Van Hitch, Chief Information Officer for the US Department of Justice. His keynote clearly demonstrated the similarities and challenges for both Federal CIOs and State CIOs. The conference program also included the following sessions; Polling the Experts: Governors, Legislators and Their Budgets, Mining for Budget Gold: How to Pay for your IT Initiatives, The Government CIO Agenda: Campaigning for Innovation and Change. The attendees participated in the following Discovery Workshops; The Emperor Has No Clothes: Facing the Brutal Reality About Continuity of Government Operations, Enterprise Data Protection: A Hard Sell for CIOs and Reaping Results from the Government Performance Project.

  • NASCIO 8th Annual DC Fly-In Advocated State Cyber Security Agenda

    Forty-two (42) state representatives participated in NASCIO's 2008 DC Fly-In. The group took the opportunity to meet with members of Congress, committee staff, federal agencies, as well as NASCIO's strategic association partners, to discuss important state IT concerns, emerging trends and obtain briefings on key policy issues. NASCIO's 2008 Call for Action focuses on strengthening national cyber security through a directed state homeland security grant program for state CIOs program funding.
  • NASCIO Presents 6th Annual National Technology Champion Award

    One of the highlights of NASCIO's Midyear Conference was the 2008 National Technology Champion Award Luncheon on May 1, during which NASCIO and its members recognized Peter Harkness, the founding editor and publisher of Governing magazine, for his outstanding achievements furthering information technology in the public sector. Through this award, NASCIO strives to acknowledge innovators who promote excellence in both technology and good government.
  • NASCIO urges state CIOs to attend the IPER Summit Conference

    The conference will focus on Essential Records and Emergency Preparedness in the States and Territories on July 21-22 at the Westin Peachtree Plaza, Atlanta GA. The Council of State Archivists (CoSA) is leading the 3-year, FEMA-funded Intergovernmental Preparedness for Essential Records (IPER) project. IPER will develop and deliver provide records-related emergency preparedness training to state and local government agencies nationwide. NASCIO is a key partner for the IPER Project.     NASCIO on the Road

    • Doug Robinson, NASCIO Executive Director, will represent the association at the upcoming Governing Managing Technology Conference taking place May 28 - 30 in Seattle, Washington. The agenda for this event features a number of NASCIO members as speakers and moderators. NASCIO President John Gillispie (Iowa) will speak during the opening session and NASCIO Vice President Gopal Khanna (Minnesota), joined by Lisa Felder (North Dakota) will participate on a panel about Long-term IT Investment. John Gillispie (Iowa), Dugan Petty (Oregon) and PK Agarwal (California) will lead the panel on Green IT-What does it Mean?

    Committee & Work Group Updates

    • The Corporate Leadership Council (CLC), representing all state members, gathered prior to the Midyear Conference on Wednesday, April 30 in Chantilly, VA. The meeting included a networking lunch and a working session on IT procurement led by David Gragan, Chief Procurement Officer for the District of Columbia.
    • The Enterprise Architecture Committee released the second in its series on Governance. Data Governance - Managing Information as an Enterprise Asset: Part I - An Introduction. Data governance entails a universe of concepts, principles, and tools intended to enable appropriate management and use of the state's investment in information. Part I in this series provides an overview that describes the basic concepts. Governance, and particularly data governance, is an evolutionary process.
