Plans for NASCIO's Annual Conference Take Shape
The 2008 Annual Conference, A Focus on the Enterprise: Driving Efficiency and Innovation, will be held September 21-24 at the Hyatt Regency Milwaukee. Conference sessions will focus on Greening Government, Organizing for Enterprise Security, Consolidation, Data Driven Leadership, and more. Discovery Workshops on a wide variety of topics including IT Investment Management, ERP and Emergency Preparedness for Essential Records will allow attendees to delve a little deeper into critical issues facing the states today. Meritorious Service Award Nominations Announced
Nominations for the 2008 NASCIO Meritorious Service Award are now being accepted. This award honors an individual who has show leadership in state government and who has worked to advance NASCIO's mission - to foster government excellence through quality business practices, information management, and technology policy. Nominees must be a current state CIO. Recent recipients of this award include Tom Jarrett, CIO, state of Delaware and Otto Doll, CIO, state of South Dakota. The 2008 recipient will be selected based on the following two criteria: accomplishments in his/her state, and service & leadership to NASCIO. The Meritorious Service Award recipient will be honored during the State Dinner at the Annual Conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on September 23, 2008.Please note: Only current state CIOs are eligible to submit a Meritorious Service Award nomination. Strong State CIO Presence Expected at the IPER Summit
Thirty-nine state CIOs or their designee will attend the IPER Summit Conference on July 21-22 at the Westin Peachtree Plaza, Atlanta GA. The conference will focus on Essential Records and Emergency Preparedness in the States and Territories. The Council of State Archivists (CoSA) is leading the 3-year, FEMA-funded Intergovernmental Preparedness for Essential Records (IPER) project. IPER will develop and provide records-related emergency preparedness training to state and local government agencies nationwide. NASCIO is a key partner for the IPER Project. Corporate Leadership Council to Meet Prior to the NASCIO Annual Conference
NASCIO's Corporate Leadership Council (CLC), which represents all corporate members, will meet prior to the NASCIO Annual Conference on Sunday, September 21 from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm Eastern Time at the Hyatt Regency in Milwaukee, WI. - NASCIO Executive Director, Doug Robinson, represented NASCIO at the IBM 2020 Briefing in Washington DC June 24-25.
- NASCIO President John Gillispie and Executive Director Doug Robinson represented NASCIO at the 2008 NGA Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, PA on July 11-14. Click here for news and photos from the meeting.
- Larry Kettlewell, CSO for the state of Kansas, spoke on behalf of NASCIO to the NACO Information Technology Committee and the Justice and Public Safety Steering Committee during the 2008 NACo Annual Conference and Exposition. Larry’s presentation included the NASCIO video, “At Risk! Securing Government in a Digital World”. Eric Sweden, NASCIO Enterprise Architect was also in attendance.
- Brenda Decker, CIO, State of Nebraska, will speak on behalf of NASCIO at the upcoming IPER Summit on July 20-22 in Atlanta, Georgia. Doug Robinson, NASCIO Executive Director, will also be attendance along with representatives from more than 40 state IT departments.
- Patrick Moore, CIO, State of Georgia, and NASCIO Executive Director, Doug Robinson will speak on state IT at the Association of Government Accountants (AGA) 5th Annual Professional Development Conference and Expo in Atlanta, Georgia July 27-30.
- NASCIO Issues Coordinator, Stephanie Jamison, will represent NASCIO at the NCSL Legislative Summit July 22 - 26, 2008 in New Orleans, LA.
Committee & Work Group Updates
- The Electronic Records and Digital Preservation Working Group released a brief "Ready for the Challenge? State CIOs and Electronic Records". Click here to read the brief www.nascio.org/publications.
- The Enterprise Architecture Committee is set to release a brief later this week on Governance and Maximizing the Investment in State Geospatial Resources.
- The Innovative Funding Working Group has surveyed the state CIOs and will use the aggregated information to update NASCIO's 2003 report on innovative funding. Look for the brief to be released September 2008.
- The Legacy Systems and Modernization Working Group survey on legacy systems in the states will be released to state CIOs by the end of July 2008. The survey will provide a baseline for the primary issues of concern for states facing the modernization of legacy systems.
