  • Plans Shift into High Gear for NASCIO Annual Conference

    NASCIO's 2008 Annual Conference is only a few days away and plans are gearing up for an exciting event. Representatives from 46 states including 41 state CIOs are expected to attend the conference which will be held September 21-24 at the Hyatt Regency in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

    The agenda, organized around the theme A Focus on the Enterprise: Driving Efficiency and Innovation, will kick off with a keynote address by The Honorable Thomas Ridge, former Governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and first Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Tuesday's agenda begins with remarks from Dr. Kathleen Hall Jamieson about handling difficult press situations. Conference sessions will focus on consolidation, the greening government, enterprise IT security, data driven leadership and more. Afternoon Discovery Workshops provide opportunities for attendees to explore an array of emerging issues in an interactive format. For complete details on the conference agenda, click here.

    TODAY, Wednesday, September 17 is the final day to register online for the conference. Registration will reopen onsite on September 21, but registration rates will be higher.

  • Corporate Leadership Council Meeting to Feature Guest Speaker, Theresa Pardo, Ph.D.

    NASCIO's Corporate Leadership Council (CLC), which represents all corporate members, will gather prior to the Annual Conference on Sunday, September 21 from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm CT at the Hyatt Regency in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The meeting will take place in the Lakeshore Ballroom on the first floor. NASCIO invites all corporate members registered for the Annual Conference to join us for lunch and to hear our guest speaker Theresa Pardo, Deputy Director of the Center for Technology in Government at the University of Albany.   • NASCIO Announces New Corporate Leadership Council Officers

    NASCIO is pleased to announce the newly elected Corporate Leadership Council (CLC) officers for the 2008-2009 program year. The incoming Chair will be Aldona Valicenti, Oracle and the Vice Chair will be Peter Berkel, EMC. The CLC represents all of NASCIO's corporate members and the chair holds an advisory seat on NASCIO's Executive Committee. Note: The first CLC call of the new program year is October 15, 2008 from 4:00-5:00pm Eastern Time.

  • Mike Locatis, CIO for the State of Colorado, and Eric Sweden, NASCIO Senior Enterprise Architect, provided updates at the National States Geographic Information Council (NSGIC) Annual Conference held September 7-11, in Keystone, Colorado. Click here to read NSGIC's blog regarding the event.
  • Tom Jarrett, CIO for the State of Delaware, and Doug Robinson, NASCIO Executive Director, presented at the NGA Executive Policy Forum on Cyber and Electronic Crime on September 8-9 in Arlington, Virginia. Denise Moore, CIO for the State of Kansas, was also in attendance.

Committee & Work Group Updates

  • The Corporate Leadership Council hosted a webinar for state members on September 11, titled, "Like an Open Book - Transparency a Key Element in Government of the People". The archived audio presentation and slides are available at www.nascio.org/committees/clc.
  • The Health IT Working Group released an issue brief entitled The MITA Touch: State CIOs and Medicaid IT Transformation. This brief discusses the Medicaid IT Architecture (MITA), its development and implementation in the states, and the role of the state CIO within this significant undertaking in the states.     The Health IT Working Group hosted an all-states call "Taking the Pulse of Health IT in the States" on September 3. This call, open to NASCIO state members only, featured Cara Campbell, Health Policy Analyst for the National Governors Association’s Center for Best Practices and provided an update for NASCIO members on the recent activities and policy recommendations of the NGA State Alliance for eHealth. Over twenty states were represented on this call.

  • The Innovative Funding for State IT Working Group released a report entitled Innovative Funding for State IT: Models, Trends & Perspectives. The report is based on a survey of the states. The report examines the use of innovative, alternative and financing funding models for technology projects that enable states to deliver savings, and improve IT services to citizens. The results update NASCIO’s 2003 report on innovative funding, Innovative Funding for Innovative State IT: New Trends and Approaches for State IT Funding, and provide state CIOs with information and insights for the facilitation of innovative funding initiatives in their own states. A product of NASCIO’s 2008 Innovative Funding for State IT Working Group, this report was developed based on results from an all states survey of state CIOs; thirty-one states responded concerning their IT funding initiatives.   • The Security and Privacy Committee released an issue brief entitled Protecting the Realm: Confronting the Realities of State Data at Risk. This brief underlines the criticality of managing states' digital assets and identifies key, high-level elements for establishing better data security programs within states. The brief is available at www.nascio.org/publications/researchBriefs.cfm.
