NASCIO announced the state CIO priority rankings for 2009. Each year NASCIO conducts a survey of the state CIOs to identify and prioritize the top policy and technology issues facing state government. NASCIO Welcomes New Director of Government Affairs
Pam Walker has been appointed NASCIO's Director of Government Affairs. In this newly created position, Pam will be responsible for developing and directing the association's government affairs activities and advocacy to advance NASCIO's strategic policy agenda. This role will include ensuring the perspectives of state CIOs views are represented in the shaping of federal legislation and policies, working with state and federal lawmakers on key state IT issues and continued alliance building with strategic partners.Adding Pam as NASCIO's full time representative in Washington will enhance the association's visibility and effectiveness on issues of importance to state chief information officers. Pam is located in NASCIO's new Washington DC office at the Hall of States, 444 North Capitol Ave, NW Suite 642, Washington, DC 20001. She can be reached at pwalker@amrms.com or (202) 624-8477.

Committees and Working Groups Announced
NASCIO has begun soliciting committee and working group volunteers for 2009 in two waves. The first wave is for several standing committees and two additional groups, which will continue their work in the coming year. To view descriptions of these committees and volunteer to serve, please visit www.nascio.org/aboutNascio/committeeSignUp.cfm. Please respond right away with your interest to serve on these committees. They will begin meeting in the near future.Stay tuned for information about newly forming issue-focused committees and working groups. The Executive Committee will determine which topics NASCIO should examine in the coming year based on the State CIO Priorities for 2009. The details of these additional committees and working groups will be announced in early-December commencing the second wave of volunteer sign-ups.- Awards Committee

Longtime NASCIO Member Retires
Karen Newman has been an active member of NASCIO for the past 20 years and a longtime member of the Programs Committee. Karen has retired from the State of Mississippi after 29.5 years of service. Karen was the Education Services Division Director for the Mississippi Department of Information Technology Services (ITS). As legislative liaison for ITS, she worked closely with the Governor's Office, the Mississippi House of Representatives and Senate members, and other statewide elected officials on technology and funding issues.
Karen was instrumental in the passage of legislation related to e-government, wireless communications, cellular equipment and services, the statewide communications infrastructure, funding for major technology projects, and other technology-related issues for the state. Karen is an honored recipient of the "In the Arena" Award presented by the Center for Digital Government to professionals across the country that has made significant contributions in the field of technology. NASCIO wishes her the best as she moves to a new chapter of her life.

CIOs Speak Out on Green IT
The Green IT Working Group is pleased to feature streaming video from state CIOs around the country discussing the importance of going green in government IT practices today. In this newest addition to NASCIO's website, "Green IT: CIOs Speak Out!" highlights state CIO involvement and current state initiatives geared toward greening state government.These streaming videos, available on both NASCIO's website (www.nascio.org/committees/green) and YouTube channel, serve as a precursor to a full green IT DVD, for which production is underway. The Green IT Video Working Group, which will provide oversight for this project, is chaired by Dugan Petty, CIO of Oregon. This video project is a collaborative effort between NASCIO's state and corporate members, and is being sponsored by the following organizations:

Committee & Work Group Updates
- HOLD THE DATE: The NASCIO Executive Committee and Enterprise Architecture and Governance Committee will present a State Webinar covering the purpose and status on deployment of state fusion centers on Wednesday, December 3, 2008, at 2:00 ET. State members watch for additional information in the coming weeks.
- NASCIO's Enterprise Architecture and Governance Committee will conduct an All States Call on the subject of Governance, examining specific state initiatives on Thursday, December 11, 2008. State members watch for an invitation in the coming weeks.
- NASCIO's Legacy Systems and Modernization Working Group will be publishing the results of their September 2008 national survey of state CIOs. This report captures states' primary points of concern regarding legacy system modernization and provides insight into strategies, options and approaches states that are considering modernizing their legacy systems. The survey report is scheduled for release on December 17, 2008.
