Executive Summary
Illinois continues to strengthen its commitment to transparency and data-driven decision-making through the strategic expansion of its statewide open data capabilities. In January 2025, the Illinois Open Data Portal was launched, marking a successful migration from the legacy CKAN platform to the Tyler Technologies Data & Insights environment. This data migration addressed several key challenges faced by the previous system, including security vulnerabilities, maintenance difficulties, limited user experience functionality, and issues with data quality and accuracy.
The Illinois Department of Innovation & Technology (DoIT) State Data Practice team coordinated with dataset owners across various state agencies, such as the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (DFPR), Department of Public Health, Department of Agriculture, Department of Human Rights, Department of Insurance, and others, to make crucial data more accessible to the public. This platform introduced several improvements, including streamlined data integration, automated schedule refreshes, and enhanced security standards, achieving the goal of strengthening state data infrastructure and improving access for all users.
